Amana Microwave To Bares Summer Meals

Summer is wrapping up and between trips to the pool or beach, yard work and various summer camps, there may not be a lot of time to spend on meals. Luckily, Amana, the brand that developed the first countertop microwave, has quick, easy tips for utilizing the ultimate time-saving appliance.

Popping popcorn and heating leftovers are common uses for the microwave, but many
people don’t realize this versatile appliance can actually be used to cook an entire meal.
Some of Amana brand’s countertop and over-the-range microwave models can even
hold a 9” x 13” glass or ceramic dish, which means they can handle everything on the
menu – from fish fillets to veggie sides and even dessert.

According to a recent online survey conducted for Whirlpool Corporation by Harris
Interactive®, 55 percent of U.S. adults named the microwave as the appliance
innovation that has most impacted their day-to-day lives in the past century. The
microwave is a long-standing staple for simplifying life in the kitchen.
“Using the microwave doesn’t mean you have to serve your family frozen TV dinners,”
said Evelyn Carpenter, Amana brand microwave expert. “You can prepare a simple
gourmet dinner from start to finish if you utilize the cooking sensors and know a few key
tricks.”

When preparing large dishes, it’s best to stir or rearrange the food during cooking to
ensure even heating. The spacious models mean that even desserts, like brownies, can
be whipped up without hassle. Just be sure to shield the corners of your pan with small
pieces of foil to prevent the corners from overcooking.
Here are a handful of easy microwave meals:

• Fresh fish fillets are a great choice for a warm summer evening, and the
microwave is well-equipped to handle this menu option.

o If starting with frozen fish, use the microwave’s defrost cycle, flipping
when necessary. If your particular model doesn’t have a defrost option,
cook at 30 percent power and cover thin tails with small pieces of foil. Be
sure the foil doesn’t touch the inside walls of the oven.

o To prepare the fillets perfectly, add two tablespoons of water and a drizzle
of fresh-squeezed lemon, then cover the dish. Cook the fish at 70 percent
power for four to six minutes per pound and tuck thin ends underneath
the pieces. The fish is done when it flakes easily with a fork and is firm
and opaque. Garnish with fresh herbs, like parsley or dill.

• Steamed garden vegetables complement any meal, and the vegetable cooking
sensor on Amana microwaves helps prevent soggy zucchini and dried out
broccoli. To use this cycle, first choose between fresh or frozen vegetables.
Then, in a microwave-safe container, add two to four tablespoons of water and
cover the vegetables with vented plastic wrap or a lid. The water keeps the
vegetables moist and ensures a flavorful dish with the right amount of crunch.
The vegetable cooking sensor also prevents overcooking, which causes
vegetables to lose nutrients.

• Corn on the cob is a summer favorite for many, and Amana microwaves can
easily cook this side dish to perfection. First remove the hulks and silks from the
corn, then butter and season as desired. Next place two ears in a glass dish with
two tablespoons of water and cover with plastic wrap, leaving a corner uncovered
to allow steam to escape. Cook for six minutes on high or, for four ears, cook
eight to 10 minutes.

Microwave cleanup is just as simple as meal preparation. To remove food that has
splattered in the microwave – which can affect the smell of the kitchen – use a damp
cloth and mild soap or a water-based cleaner. Avoid using ammonia- or bleach-based
cleaners in the microwave and never spray directly into the microwave. Instead, spray
the cleaning cloth then wipe the microwave. If your microwave has a glass turntable, it
can be placed in your dishwasher for easy cleaning.

To get rid of leftover food smells, such as burnt popcorn, heat up a cup of water with one
tablespoon of lemon juice for four to five minutes, then let it sit in the microwave for
several minutes after the cycle.

Survey Presumes Consumers Beholds To Save

A recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Whirlpool Corporation reveals consumers want to make a habit out of saving time, money and energy with their home appliances. And as 2011 wraps up, they're looking for more tools to help them do just that in the new year.

According to the survey 75 percent of consumers ages 18-34 have already taken "green" steps, but they are looking to do even more to save energy, water and money. That's something companies like Whirlpool say they're keeping in mind when it comes to product development.

"We are not surprised to see that consumers are devoted to living an energy efficient lifestyle," says Monica Teague, Senior PR Manager at Whirlpool Corporation. "Whirlpool is constantly innovating new products that conserve water and reduce energy consumption in order to help consumers live a more eco-friendly lifestyle."

It's a lifestyle many are turning to and want more of. And while 78 percent are interested in monitoring their household's energy use — they're hungry for more information on how to save. According to the survey, a quarter of those interested in saving are not at all aware of the energy and water usage of their appliances.

Many consumers have already made significant lifestyle changes in an effort to save energy and money. 65 percent of consumers already use ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances and CFL light bulbs, 36 percent purchase green products when possible and 15 percent actually seek out green products, according to the survey.

And consumers seem willing to invest in saving money over time. Almost half of those who took part in the survey, 49 percent, said they would consider paying more money for an appliance if it would reduce their utility bills over time. Replacing appliances that were made before 2000 with ENERGY STAR® qualified products can help save on both energy and water costs. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), replacing a washer and refrigerator made before 2000 with new ENERGY STAR® qualified models can save up to $135 and $40 each year, respectively.

For those not currently in the market but still looking to save, there are plenty of ways for consumers to be more efficient using the appliances they already have in their home.

According to the survey, 87 percent still pre-rinse their dishes (even though it's unnecessary). By scraping and skipping pre-rinsing, consumers can save up to 20 gallons of water per load and by using the dishwasher vs. handwashing save up to 230 hours per year (that's a 10-day vacation!).
Run your dishwasher, washer and dryer late in the evening to avoid the peak hours.
Proper appliance maintenance like emptying the lint trap, vacuuming refrigerator coils and cleaning your washer on a regular basis can help keep appliances running efficiently.
Use pots and pans with flat bottoms that fit the burners. A 6" pot on an 8" burner wastes over 40 percent of that burner's heat. Using the right sized pot can save up to $36 annually for an electric range, and $18 for a gas range.
Don't open the oven door during cooking; each time you open the door, you can lose about 25 - 30 degrees of heat. Try cooking with a full oven too, and using the broiler when possible, which uses less energy and does not require preheating.

Philippines Has Won Three Consecutive Times In The Prestigious Sub-Zero And Wolf Kitchen Design Contest

Sub-Zero and Wolf created a Kitchen Design Contest to honor the professionals who have helped make these brands the quintessential components of the uncompromised kitchen. Occurring once every two years, this competition is the most respected within the design industry and is judged by a panel of professional designers representing the various disciplines under kitchen design.

Architects and interior designers from all over the world participate in the Sub-Zero and Wolf Kitchen Design Contest. Each entry must include at least one full size Sub-Zero refrigeration unit and Wolf cooking appliances as its primary food preparation equipment. Floor plans and elevations, kitchen photos and a written narrative describing their design, the design challenges, and how they overcame those obstacles must be submitted to Sub-Zero and Wolf Headquarters. No names must appear in any of these to avoid any bias on the part of the judges.

The contest dates back to 1992 when it was only open to entries from US and Canada. It was only in 2004 when the contest was opened to entries from the international market, and for three consecutive times since then, the Philippines has won in the prestigious Sub-Zero and Wolf Kitchen Design Contest.

In 2004-05, interior design board top-notcher Cara Marcelo won the International Category Award for best kitchen design. Her winning entry was a modern kitchen designed for a family well known for having one of the biggest restaurant chains in the country. The homeowners thought it was high time to update their old kitchen into an open welcoming space where they can entertain guests, have family meals, and concoct new recipes to add to their menu, so Cara designed a kitchen with clean lines, granite countertops, glass elements, beautiful garden views and fully integrated appliances. The homeowners dream comes full circle, as this allows them to wine and dine their guests and encourage family interaction in a space that is perfect for their lifestyle.

In the following contest in 2006-07, Architect Ed Calma won the same award. His winning kitchen design was for a kitchen that was almost as large as a chapel with two double doors that provide a cathedral-like entry to the kitchen. It boasts high ceilings with clerestory glass windows bathing the kitchen with natural light and views of the sky and surrounding trees. It has two zones defined by a large center stainless counter for food preparation with a Wolf double oven and five integrated modules. On the opposite side of the counter, three Sub-Zero 736TCI units placed side by side make an imposing wall. The other zone is a breakfast area defined by a multi-level bar counter made of solid wood.

For 2008-09, not only did Architect Ed Calma bag the International Category Award again, he also bested all competition and won the First Place Award for Contemporary Kitchen in the overall Sub-Zero and Wolf 2008-09 Kitchen Design Contest! This is the first time that the international winners could compete for the overall categories as well. The winning entry that bested 1,400 other entries is no other than Arch. Calma’s own kitchen. The kitchen counter is the focal point of an open plan, and it bisects the area of the kitchen space and the living and dining area. Arch. Calma wanted to emphasize this division spatially by continuing a framing element on the second floor to become a bar counter of the kitchen. The cooking counter thus becomes an integral part of the interior architecture. The rest of the kitchen area was left empty like a small gallery space where the Sub-Zero 736TCI made it possible to be concealed into the rest of the storage pantry cabinetries. The central location of the cooking counter and its design integration with the rest of the architecture makes it a main topic of conversation when guests come in.

The Sub-Zero and Wolf Kitchen Design Contest pays tribute to the best kitchens by showcasing the best designers and their best designs. The Philippines prides itself with having three wins in a row.

Whatever vision one has for home kitchens, top of the line refrigeration from Sub-Zero and professional performance cooking appliances from Wolf will fit in beautifully. Sub-Zero and Wolf are distributed by Focus Global Inc. Visit the Showroom located at Pioneer corner Reliance Streets, Mandaluyong City. Showroom hours are Tuesdays to Saturdays, 10AM-7PM and Sundays, 1PM-6PM. For inquiries, call (632) 634-8587 or email subzero@focusglobalinc.com. You may also log on to www.subzerowolfintl.com.

Frigidaire: The 2011 Entitled Energy Feature Product Manufacturer Associate Of The Year

The maker of Frigidaire brand appliances has been named an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year for Product Manufacturer by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  The award recognizes the company for increasing their selection and delivery of environmentally-conscious ENERGY STAR qualified appliances and helping to educate consumers about the ENERGY STAR program.  Award winners are selected from more than 20,000 organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.

“Today, EPA is recognizing Electrolux for their leadership in addressing climate change through energy efficiency,” said Elizabeth Craig, Acting Director of EPA’s Office of Atmospheric Programs.  “Electrolux is producing and promoting energy-efficient ENERGY STAR products that help American consumers join in the effort to increase our nation’s energy efficiency and reduce our emissions of greenhouse gases.  We look forward continuing to partner with these winners as they create the next generation of energy efficient products.”

In 2010, Frigidaire encouraged consumers to recycle old appliances and replace them with ENERGY STAR qualified appliances through the Swap and Save program, which so far has saved U.S. consumers more than $240 million dollars in energy savings and more than 7.4 billion gallons of water.

“As a proud ENERGY STAR partner, Frigidaire is committed to helping our customers save money and increase energy efficiency in their homes,” said Marty O’Gorman, general manager of Frigidaire.  “This recognition is an honor and a testament to our long-standing relationship with the ENERGY STAR program.”

Frigidaire’s new collections of kitchen and laundry appliances include ENERGY STAR qualified appliances in every product category, where applicable, offering a wide variety of stylish appliances that are from 10% to 80% more energy-efficient than non-ENERGY STAR® qualified appliances.  Innovative features that minimize energy and water consumption are a priority across the appliance line, from washers that use up to 82% less energy and 60% less water to refrigerators and freezers that use at least 10% less energy, to dishwashers that use at least 41% less energy and 40% less water than was used just 10 years ago.  In fact, Frigidaire dishwashers use five gallons of water per load versus 27 gallons for hand washing – a savings of more than 50,000 gallons of water over the average life of the product.

The maker of Frigidaire applies this commitment to operational efficiency as well. The parent company of Frigidaire is recognized as leader in the Durable Household Products category in the most recent Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. As part of its sustainability strategy, the parent company of Frigidaire has committed that by the end of 2012, its factories, offices and warehouses will use 28% less energy than in 2005 and had achieved a 25% reduction versus 2005 at the end of 2010. Additionally, the company has set ambition targets related to water usage and transportation emissions reduction globally.

Frigidaire has always been committed to helping consumers save money and energy.  In fact, consumers who are interested in swapping out old appliances can calculate their potential cash and energy savings at frigidaire.com/energysaving or on Facebook at facebook.com/frigidaire.

The entire new Frigidaire appliance line is available nationwide at Best Buy, Lowe’s, Sears and select independent appliance dealers.

About ENERGY STAR

ENERGY STAR was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants associated with energy use. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 60 kinds of products as well as new homes and buildings. Last year alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved $18 billion on their utility bills and prevented greenhouse gas equivalent to those of 34 million cars. Products, homes and buildings that have earned the ENERGY STAR prevent emissions by meeting strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the EPA.  For more information, go to energystar.gov.

Whirpool Appliance Head Implicated For The Expansion Of Smart Appliance

Whirlpool Corporation -continues to be committed to providing consumers technology with purpose. Today, the convergence of technology with everyday household appliances is evolving to optimize energy consumption and allow appliances to work together.  In 2012, the company's flagship brand, Whirlpool brand, will bring connected appliances to the marketplace — yet another step closer to making many of its appliances "smart" by the end of 2015. Over the next 18 months, four appliances will be introduced including a refrigerator, dishwasher, washer and dryer.

"Our electric grid is more than 100 years old and not designed to handle all of the appliances in today's home. Today appliances work independently from one another with little opportunity to optimize," said Warwick Stirling, global director of energy and sustainability for Whirlpool Corporation. "And while manufacturers continue to explore innovations that improve the energy efficiency of individual products, the incremental gains are getting smaller and becoming more expensive to achieve."

The concept of Smart Grid-enabled appliances has evolved to a broader conversation around the connected home and overall home management. With these new smart appliances, consumers can easily shift their energy consumption to off-peak times — saving money and benefitting the environment. A home energy management device will read usages from appliances and signals from power companies to optimize energy use. Even more appealing for consumers is peace of mind driven by alerts and notifications and 'remote control' functionality.

What Consumers Want

While consumers want to be green, they still want to retain control but will change their energy consumption choices if they are given real-time information about how much energy is being used. More importantly, users don't want to just monitor and manage energy but control functions on their appliances and all home management functions including security systems and water and temperature management.  A recent survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Whirlpool Corporation found that:

Seventy-eight percent are interested in monitoring their household's energy use.
Most want to use their smartphone to make life easier. In fact, 90% of 18-34 year olds who have a smartphone would be happy to have their smartphone tell their appliances anything; 17% want to know when it's time to switch the laundry and 17% want to know when items are ready (food, etc.).

When asked about smart phones communicating with appliances, respondents were split on what would be most useful:  alert when the washer is done; notify me when items are ready (i.e. cooked/clean); Preheat my oven or turn it off; start appliances for self-clean; tell me what I need to stock the fridge; start or refresh the laundry; start the dishwasher.

What's Next?

Bringing all of this functionality together for the end user is the current focus for manufacturers, utilities and software companies. Ultimately, the Smart grid won't consist of just one app but multiple ways of accessing it through a bundle of applications. This will also affect product design. For example, some of the controls on appliances may be eliminated and be controlled via mobile phone.

Appliances will be able to provide even more feedback to consumers whether it is the concept of preventative maintenance or use and care guides. For example, a clothes dryer needs to have the lint cleaned out of the venting pipe periodically and the appliance could automatically notify consumers when this needs doing. With many washers now offering bulk detergent dispensing, the washer could alert the owner that the reservoir needs to be refilled.

Whirlpool @ CES

Stirling, who is responsible for championing next generation smart appliances connected to the emerging electrical smart grid, will participate in two panel discussions on this topic.
