General Electric Recaptures Dishwashers Because of Hearth Danger

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of product: GE Dishwashers
Units: About 2.5 million
Manufacturer: GE Consumer & Industrial, of Louisville, Ky.
Hazard: Liquid rinse-aid can leak from its dispenser onto the dishwasher’s internal wiring which can cause an electrical short and overheating, posing a fire hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: GE has received 191 reports of overheated wiring including 56 reports of property damage. There were 12 reports of fires that escaped the dishwasher. Fire damage was limited to the dishwasher or the adjacent area. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recall includes GE built-in dishwashers sold under the following brand names: Eterna, GE, GE Profile™, GE Monogram®, Hotpoint®, and Sears-Kenmore. The dishwashers were sold in white, black, almond, bisque and stainless steel. The brand name is printed on the dishwasher’s front control panel. The following model and serial numbers can be found inside the dishwasher tub on the front left side of the dishwasher.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled dishwashers and contact General Electric for a free repair, a $150 rebate towards the purchase of a new GE dishwasher, or a $300 rebate towards the purchase of a new GE Profile or GE Monogram dishwasher.

GE Dishwasher Remember

The recall hazard involves the liquid rinse-aid dispenser which can leak into internal wiring of the dishwasher and may cause an electrical short or overheating, resulting in a possible fire hazard for consumers and homeowners.

General Electric says they have received 191 reports of overheated dishwasher wiring. There have been no injuries reported, but 56 claims for property damage and 12 cases of fire damage. The 12 reports of fire have resulted in limited damages mainly to the actual dishwasher or the area adjacent to the dishwasher.

The General Electric dishwashers included in the recall were manufactured in the U.S and sold for the price of about $400.00 in appliance and department stores from September 1997 through December 2001.
If you are using one of the recalled dishwashers you should stop using it now and contact General Electric for free repairs, a 150 rebate for a new GE dishwasher, or a $300 rebate for a new GE Profile or GE Monogram dishwasher.

Whirlpool Dryer dryer will not keep Runnning

Model #LE5800XSW3, this electric dryer would start for the customer when the button was pressed but it would stop as soon as the button was released. She did notice if the button was held down, the dryer would continue to run, but again would stop as soon as the button was let go. With the aid a heavy book, she was able to finis the laundry, but this didn't seem like a long term solution to the problem. Wanting to prevent any further damage, she gave me a call to come out and have a look.



Various electrical components are used to get the dryers motor started and then to keep it running during a cycle. Those with electronic controls will often just close a set of electrical contacts on a control board when the start button is pressed, while others using mechanical timers will have push-to-start buttons to get things going. Whichever method is used, the purpose is to provide a current path for electricity to flow to the motor. When the switch fails, the symptom will generally be a motor that will not start, or like the dryer I was visiting, will only run as long as the button was being continuously pressed.

With power obviously to the dryer and it's electrical components (it would start after all) I figured the push-to-start switch was the obvious place to begin my search for a failure. Now normally I would explain how to go about some basic testing of these components, but I have already written a post Understanding Push-to-Start Switches which I think does a good job of this. By following the information in the post, I was able to determine the coil in the switch was reading as an open circuit which means it was no longer keeping the switch contacts closed once the button as released. To get this dryer working again, a new switch is in order.

With a new start switch in hand, I removed the mounting screws and while paying attention to where each wire attached, I installed the new switch and reconnected each wire to it's appropriate terminal. With the dryer plugged back into the outlet, pressing the start button caused the motor to start, and once the button was released, it just kept going. Now the customer can get back to doing laundry without using a book from the reference section.
