Accommodating Hair Dryer Air Flow Equipment

Dryer venting restrictions and clogs are very problematic for proper dryer performance. If you notice your dryer taking longer than normal or if you have to run two or more drying cycles just to get your clothes dry, I advice people to check their dryer vents first before anything else.

If you find your dryer exhaust flexible hose/ducting is torn or kinked, its best to replace it.

GE Dishwasher Remember

The recall hazard involves the liquid rinse-aid dispenser which can leak into internal wiring of the dishwasher and may cause an electrical short or overheating, resulting in a possible fire hazard for consumers and homeowners.

General Electric says they have received 191 reports of overheated dishwasher wiring. There have been no injuries reported, but 56 claims for property damage and 12 cases of fire damage. The 12 reports of fire have resulted in limited damages mainly to the actual dishwasher or the area adjacent to the dishwasher.

The General Electric dishwashers included in the recall were manufactured in the U.S and sold for the price of about $400.00 in appliance and department stores from September 1997 through December 2001.
If you are using one of the recalled dishwashers you should stop using it now and contact General Electric for free repairs, a 150 rebate for a new GE dishwasher, or a $300 rebate for a new GE Profile or GE Monogram dishwasher.

The dishwasher recall includes GE built-in dishwashers sold in the colors of almond, bisque, black, stainless steel and white with the brand names of:
Eterna
GE
GE Profile™
GE Monogram®
Hotpoint®
Sears-Kenmore
To find out if your dishwasher is part of the recall be sure to have the following information ready:

The brand name which is printed on the dishwasher’s front control panel.

The model and serial numbers are located inside the front of the dishwasher tub on the left side.

For more information contact: General Electric toll-free at (877) 607-6395 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET Monday through Saturday. Consumers also can visit the Web site Here

Washing Machine Metal Fill Tubes

When I go out on service calls for preventive maintance checks on washers and I noticed the rubber fills hoses that connect to the washer would get bubbles in them, some small, some large. After time those will burst and start flooding your laundry area and if your laundry room is in your house that can be quite the mess and cause massive floor damage to say the least.

So I recommend you check your washing machine fill hoses every year, and replace them if you notice bubbles. Stainless steel fill hoses are the best to get as they won’t get those bubbles in them.

Difficulties Around Cooking Externally, But Beneath Food Preparation Inside?

Possible Reason:
The oven may not be properly preheating. In most cases, when the oven is set for a 350 F or 180 C bake cycle, the control counts down for about 6 minutes and beeps. At this time the oven cavity is conditioned but the temperature is not stabilized.

Solution:
The first step is to always adjust the rack height before preheating the oven. Place the rack so that food is near the centre of the oven. The oven bakes evenly when food is centred in the oven. Also, pans must not block airflow. Food placed too close to the top or bottom of the oven will bake and brown unevenly. See rack placement for more details.

Now preheat the oven but wait an additional 10 to 15 minutes after the beep before placing the food into the oven. This is especially important with baked goods such as cakes, cookies, breads, and pies.

Drinking water Techniques - The Best Way to Check For Hard Water

The following is a list of steps that you can take to test you water for hardness:

If you live in a municipal area, contact your local water company.

If you live in a rural area, or some suburban areas, contact your local water company or a county extension agent.

Have your water tested by a laboratory.

You can have your household tap water tested for hardness, dissolved solids, iron, PH, and amount of corrosiveness by an independent, EPA certified laboratory.

Soft water is 0-3 grains.
Medium water is 3-7 grains.
Hard water is 7-12 grains.
Anything over 12 grains is extremely hard, and a water softener is recommended.

How To Correct A Loud Frigidaire Clothes Washer Dryer

Question: I have a front load Frigidaire Clothes Washer, model number GLTF1670as0, that has started making a loud noise when spins. It still spins the clothes dry however, you can hear it spin from the other room with the door closed. Why is my clothes washer so loud?

Answer: It could be a bad rear tub bearing. Spin the tub by hand and see if it still makes noise. Also, take a look at the rear pulley to see if there is a grease or small water train coming from the center bearing.

Widespread Refrigerator Problems it is Possible To Fix On Your Own (so when you should call a professional)

Ice and frost build-up in the freezer – This usually means that there is a problem in the self-defrost system. Test the three components in the self-defrosting system, the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat, or the defrost timer.

You may have damaged refrigerator or freezer door gaskets. When you open the freezer door, you also let in a blast of warm, often humid air. This moisture usually freezes onto the evaporator coils immediately.

Test the seal by placing a dollar bill half-way in the freezer door and then tug on it. If there is some resistance, then the seal is good. You can also test the seal by placing a high-powered flashlight in the freezer directed towards the door. Close the freezer door and turn off the lights in your kitchen. If you can see any light leakage, you may have a bad seal.

Water is inside at the bottom of the refrigerator – This is usually caused by blocked drainage tubes. Be sure to unplug your refrigerator before doing any work. The drain tubes can be found either on the inside of your refrigerator, at the top next to the temperature controls, behind the unit (disconnect the drain tube to clear it) or by accessing the main back panel of the freezer under the cooling coil. Diagrams showing the drainage tube locations for your refrigerator and freezer can be found online.

You can use a turkey baster to flush hot water into the drain tube to clear any obstruction. If it seems like the drain tube is frozen or plugged up with ice, use a hair dryer to defrost it.

Your refrigerator feels warm or is cycling on and off frequently – Clean the condenser coils located at the bottom of your refrigerator behind the kick plate/grill.

Leave it to the pros if you hear any of the following –

Your refrigerator is not cooling and you hear a hissing noise.
The condenser coils become damaged or there is a hole in one of the coils.

How To Trouble Shoot Your Hot Water Dispenser

No power

Residential under-the-counter hot water dispensers plug into a standard wall socket, where there should be electricity at all times. To check the socket to be sure it's okay, plug something else (like a nightlight) into the socket. If there's no power to the socket, check the house fuses or circuit breakers, or have a qualified electrician find and repair the problem.

Overload switch

If the wall socket has power, check to see if there's an overload switch on the hot water dispenser housing. If there is, reset the switch (usually by pressing it in), wait 15 minutes, then try the tap and see if the water coming out is hot. If there's no overload switch, there may be an internal fuse on the unit. To see that, you need to remove screws and a panel.
Heating element
If there's no overload switch--or if the unit still doesn't heat--the heating element may be burned out. If so, it may be replaceable. Check with the manufacturer for repair or replacement instructions.

The faucet leaks hot water

A little hot water leaking from the faucet from time to time is normal. Water increases in volume as it heats, so a small amount of water may drip from the faucet to relieve the pressure inside the water tank under the sink.
If the leak is continuous, though, the shut-off valve needs to be repaired. That usually requires the help of a qualified appliance repair technician.
The water is way too hot!
The temperature control on residential hot-water dispensers is normally factory-set. But you can usually set it to a different temperature. Consult your owner's manual to learn how to set yours.

The water pressure is poor

The amount of water coming from the hot water dispenser is primarily determined by the amount of water entering the tank below. If the water flow is unusually slow, though, the incoming water may be obstructed--either a valve isn't open all the way, or there's something blocking the tank output or the faucet.

Kitchenaid Refrigerator Not Necessarily Generating Its Polar Environment

Model #KSRS27ILSS01, this side by side refrigerator had worked fine for years, but just recently it stopped making ice. Ice makers not producing ice can usually be reduced down to a few simple causes, and once you know what to look for and where to look, the repair can usually be made easily and in a short period of time. After I started my trouble shooting routine, the reason for the failure become obvious, but the cause took a bit more investigation.

Ice makers have become very commonplace in refrigerators these days, and if you are someone that enjoys the convenience of having ice available simply by pressing a button, it can be rather frustrating when the unit stops functioning. Most ice makers are automated in their operation and require only a source of electricity, a water supply, and cold air in order to produce ice. If the ice maker looses any single item, or it fails itself, the ice production will decrease or stop altogether. By checking each item, we can usually determine where a failure has occurred and get the unit back up and running.

On this unit, the first thing I noticed was the end of the fill tube was frozen and blocked with ice at the point it enters the fill cup of the ice maker. If no water can get to the ice maker, the ice maker isn't going to work. This has been an issue on many of these refrigerators with the in the door ice buckets, and the repair can be quickly completed as I outlined in a post Kitchenaid Refrigerator Frozen Icemaker. But the difference I noticed on this model was the ice wasn't contained to the fill tube, but the fill cup was iced up as well (see photo above). This would indicate water was most likely still flowing into the ice maker fill cup even after it was turned off.

Water to the ice maker comes from the house source via an assembly that usually will consist of one or more water valves. These valves are held shut by water pressure from the line, and are opened by energizing an electromagnetic coil. This ensures the valves will fail in the safe or closed position should there be a problem. But if the valve is unable to completely seal closed, water will leak past the valve and enter the fill tube.

I removed the ice maker from the freezer and cleared out all the ice stuck within the fill tube and fill cup. After reinstalling the ice maker, I started a harvest cycle which allowed me to visually see the ice maker operate mechanically and fill with water. Everything worked as expected, but the thing that seemed out of the ordinary was once the valve turned off, water continued to drip from the fill tube. Looking like I found the problem, I removed the old valve assembly and installed a new water inlet valveusing the new quick connectors. After turning the water back on to the unit, I started another harvest cycle, but this time, when the valve turned off, the water stopped flowing.

Just a note: when replacing water valves, the new valve may be an updated version and may not look identical to the one you are replacing. Often times, like on this one, the old valve used screw on compression fittings that need to be cut off to allow the water lines to slide into the new style quick connectors.

Whirlpool Washer Dryer Seeping Water

Model #GHW9400PW1, the customer had returned from a weekend away, only to find water inside the tub of her trusty Duet washer when she attempted to do some wash. The door was closed while they were away, and there was only a little water that was easily drained by selecting the drain cycle. Everything looked good and the washer worked without any problems. But the next day, water was again sitting in the tub requiring a drain cycle to be run before doing any laundry. This pattern continued until I was given a call to have a look at the situation.

Standing water in the tub of any washing machine between cycles is an indication of either water continuing to enter from the faucet, or water not properly draining at the end of the cycle. The source of the water can usually be determined by simply looking to see if it is clean water from the fill valves, or dirty water that just didn't drain away. Either way, the problem needs to be addressed as it may be an indication of a problem with one of the washer parts like the drain pump or water fill valves.

The complaint on this washer was standing water and based on the customers description and a little investigation, the water was entering during periods of non use and the water was clean like it came from the faucet. This all but eliminated the source as being a blocked drain pump because one, it was clean water, and two, water entering back into the washer from the drain stand pipe would generally be accompanied by an error code due to siphoning. Which leaves us with the fill valves.

Water fill valves are used in most any appliance that uses water be it a washer, dishwasher, refrigerator for ice and water, or the now popular dryer with steam features. These valves are simple in their operation as they use a magnetic coil to open a plunger allowing water to flow. At the end of these plungers is a rubber membrane used to help seal the plunger to the housing when not in use. A combination of the plunger spring, and water pressure from the faucet holds the plunger shut and keeps the valves water tight when not in use. But if the membrane becomes damaged, or sediments in the water pipes enter the valve and become stuck at the opening, the plunger cannot seal the shut, and the valve will leak water. Usually it is a small amount that may take days to be noticed, while other times, the flow of water can be easily seen as a trickle from the fill hose.

Sometimes, simply removing the water hoses and cleaning the screens, then running water into the machine will be enough to flush the sediments away thus solving the problem. Other times, the only solution is to replace the valve assembly after clearing any debris from the water line. My personal experience suggests that it is best to replace the valve once it has started leaking. I don't say this because it makes me more money, but you must realise these valves are connected to you home plumbing and are under pressure 24/7, 365 and the potential for damage due to a water leak is always a possibility. So what I am saying is it is better to be safe than sorry.

Once the new inlet valve assembly was installed and the water connections put back in place, I ran a quick diagnostic cycle to make sure everything was working as it should. The customer can now be satisfied the washer is working and that there shouldn't be any problems with water in the tub between visits. At least for awhile.

Frigidaire Washing Machine Won't Spin

Model #ATF6700FS0, this front load washer would wash properly, but the clothes seemed to be very wet at the end of the cycle. The customer tried different things thinking the problem had to do with the size or type of load, but nothing seemed to work. Then the customer happened to catch the washer at the end of a wash cycle and noticed it never really came up and spun the clothes like it normally would. The high RPM spin of the front load washer is one of those nice benefits of owning one, so the customer thought it was time to get it fixed.

Because of the high spin speeds of front load washers, the doors are equipped with a latch and lock mechanism to prevent the door from being opened during the washers operation. These locks will often be actuated by a solenoid or wax motor to ensure they remain latched during the wash cycle. This model uses a two stage lock that latches the door when the load starts, and then when it is time to spin, the second lock engages to ensure the door is properly secured prior to beginning the spin. When this second lock engages, it also closes a set of switch contacts (the auxiliary door switch) telling the control board the door is closed and locked. If for some reason this switch is not closed, the washer will tumble during what would normally be the spin cycle until the entire cycle is complete.

On the entire Frigidaire GLTFxxxxxxx, ATFxxxxxxx, and Kenmore models starting with 417.xxxxxx, line of front load washers, if the secondary door lock fails, the unit will not spin. If you suspect this is the reason your washer is not spinning, do a check of the error log (consult the tech sheet for how to access) and you will find an E47 error has been logged. This error indicates the control board thinks the wax motor has failed because the auxiliary switch never closed. The customer will not see this error in the display, but it will be stored in memory. A quick resistance check of the wax motor will tell you if it has failed. Expect 1K to 1.5K of resistance from most of the wax motor heaters.

After finding the E47 error stored in memory, I went after the switch by removing the outer door seal spring so I could pull the switch out the front. A quick resistance check showed the wax motor was open electrically so it was no longer working. Installed a new switch assembly, reattached all the wires along with the door seal. And now the washer will wash and spin.
